What Is Meditation? My Personal Definition:

There is no single definition of meditation that everybody agrees on.

My personal favorite definition is that meditation is the practice of directing attention.

For example, as you are reading this, you look at your right hand. You directed your vision from the text to your right hand, and therefore you directed your attention from the vision of the text to the vision of your right hand.

Everything you do is about where you direct your attention.

To put it simply, you could say that meditation = the practice of having more control over yourself.

Let's say that you want to relax. You take deep breaths and you focus on the sensations of the air going in and out. As you direct your attention to these sensations, your stress and your stressful thoughts lessen.

When you direct your attention to something pleasant, you let less space to the unpleasant things because we have a limited attention capacity.

We can only focus on one thing at a time.

So why not focus on what you want to focus on the most?

This is meditation. You focus on what you want and you let all the things that are not so important get smaller or disappear.
